What Does It Mean to "Find Your Edge"?

In yoga, we often hear teachers talk about "finding your edge." But what does this really mean? Simply put, your edge is that sweet spot between comfort and challenge – and here's the truth: it's different for everyone.

The Power of Honesty in Your Practice

Being truthful (Satya) in yoga isn't about pushing yourself into the "perfect" pose. It's about honestly acknowledging where you are today. Sometimes, this means taking a modification. Other times, it means trying something that scares you a little. Both choices require equal courage and truth.

Meeting Yourself Where You Are

  • Every body is different
  • Today's practice might feel different from yesterday's
  • All variations are equally valid

Crow Pose: One Pose, Many Paths

Let's take Crow Pose (Bakasana) as an example. While the full expression might look intimidating, there's a variation for everyone:

Getting Started

    • Crow pose prep with feet on blocks
    • Crow pose with toes still touching the ground
    • Practice the arm position in malasana (squat)
    • Building core strength with plank variations

Next Steps

    • Full crow with a wall behind you for confidence
    • Crow pose holds with one foot lifting at a time
    • Working with crow pose hops

Explore

    • Full crow pose with holds
    • Transitions into and out of crow
    • Side crow variations

Finding Truth in Modifications

Using props or modifications isn't "cheating" – it's being honest with yourself. Props can:

  • Build confidence
  • Create a better understanding of alignment
  • Allow you to stay in poses longer to build strength
  • Make poses accessible while maintaining their benefits

The Journey of Growth

Remember, yoga isn't about achieving a perfect pose – it's about the journey of self-discovery. Each time you step onto your mat, you have the opportunity to practice truthfulness by:

  • Listening to your body
  • Respecting your limits
  • Celebrating small progress
  • Being patient with your journey

Your Practice, Your Truth

The most advanced yogi isn't the one who can do the most impressive poses – it's the one who practices with the most awareness and honesty. Your edge is yours alone, and honoring it is one of the most powerful practices of Satya you can cultivate.
